My dear Grandpa Tag passed away this week. So many memories and emotions have come over the last few days as we all say goodbye to him here with us.
He was one month shy of turning 90 years old: 1924 – 2014. We are all so happy for him to be free from his aging body and to join his beloved brothers and parents in heaven. Happy for him, but sad for us. The last 8 years or so have not been easy on him, or my sweet Grandma who was caring for him, as he had dementia. Even with dementia, he still kept his amazing sense of humor. He was our “Grumpa”, always pretending to be grumpy for a laugh from one of his grandkids.
One of many favorite memories of my Grandpa was whenever he opened a gift from one of us. If it was something boring like a sweater or a pair of socks, he would always make a mad face and throw the gift to the ground. And then we would all laugh. He’s the only one who could get away with that kind of bad behavior, and we all loved him for it. He was so good with all of his grandkids, and even his great grandkids. Growing up I loved our trips to Montana to visit him and my grandma. Trips to Whitefish Lake, Palm Desert and Glasgow will always make me think of him. He would always take us to get a donut on his early morning coffee run.
He had a bond with his brothers like no other. Nicknamed “Tag” by his older brothers, we can’t help but think about the joyous reunion they’re having up in heaven.
He was such a kind gentleman until the end. I’m so thankful to be a part of his wonderful posterity. We are all better people having him as a wonderful example to us all. We will miss you sweet Grandpa Tag. Til we meet again. <3
