The most delicious appetizer: Chicken Satay with Peanut Dipping Sauce.
Here’s a great appetizer that looks and sounds fancy when really it’s pretty easy to make at home: Chicken Satay with a peanut dipping sauce. If you’re headed to a party or gathering sometime soon, this would be a great appetizer to bring and easily warm up when you arrive. The tangy and tender chicken paired with a mild and creamy peanut sauce is truly a game changer. It is an appetizer but if you want to make Chicken Satay more of a meal, just pair it with rice and veggies. The whole family will love it!
What you’ll need to make Chicken Satay:
- 2 boneless and skinless chicken breasts
- 1 bottle Ginger Sesame Dressing (we prefer Marzetti brand)
- 1 package wooden skewers
For the Peanut Dipping Sauce:
- 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
- 1/4 cup hot water
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons lime juice
- 2 tablespoons Asian chili sauce
- 1 tablespoon dark brown sugar
- 1 garlic clove minced
- 1 tablespoon fresh cilantro chopped
- 2 green onions minced
How to make Chicken Satay:
- Soak wooden skewers in a pan of water.
- Pound flat two chicken breasts.
- Once pounded flat, slice the chicken breasts into thin strips.
- Place the uncooked chicken strips into a bowl and pour about half the bottle of dressing into a bowl to marinate the chicken for 30 minutes to one hour.
- Weave the chicken strips onto wooden skewers.
- Place all the skewers onto a wire cooling rack over a lined baking sheet. Covering the wooden skewer ends with tinfoil while they are under the broiler.
- Place this baking sheet under the broiler of your oven set to low for 6 – 7 minutes flipping and rotating the skewers half way through, until the chicken is cooked and browned on all sides.
- Serve with the peanut dipping sauce.
For the Peanut Dipping Sauce:
- Whisk the peanut butter and the hot water together in a medium bowl.
- Stir in the remaining ingredients. Transfer to a smaller bowl.
How to Store Chicken Satay:
You can keep the cooked chicken as well as the sauce in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one week. Just pull it out when you’re ready to dive in again!
Why do you soak your wooden chicken skewers in water?
Soaking the skewers in water prevents them from burning when on the grill.
Can you grill Chicken Satay?
Yes! We like to bake the chicken in this recipe because it saves time, but you can always pull out the grill if you love that grilled flavor.
Is Chicken Satay healthy?
Chicken Satay is a great source of protein and isn’t fried like a lot of other chicken recipes. Pair it with veggies and a small portion of sauce to make a healthy and balanced meal!

Recipe Notes
When pounding chicken flat, I like to use an old (wiped out) plastic bag from a cereal box. The plastic on those bags is indestructible, and it doesn't break easily.
