How to make a delicious Crab Louie Salad at home.
I recently shared my favorite Clam Chowder recipe, and while we are on a seafood kick, I thought I need to share my other favorite thing to order from Market Street Grill (a delicious restaurant here in Utah), it’s the Crab Louie Salad. This salad is loaded with big chunks of cooked and chilled king crab, hard boiled eggs, steamed and chilled asparagus, avocado and topped with a traditional thousand island dressing. It’s the best salad, and so fun to make at home.
We are using King Crab Legs for this salad. I love to watch the prices of King Crab of my local grocery store. If the prices go under $20 per pound, it’s a good deal. When you buy from your local grocery store, you will usually be buying it already cooked. If it’s pink in color, it is cooked. When you bring it home, you can store it in your freezer until ready to warm up and crack open. If you don’t have any tools to crack the shells off of crab, good old kitchen shears work great! When you are ready to eat, you will want to either let it thaw out in the fridge over night, or you can quickly steam the cooked crab in a pan with a little water set to medium high heat and a lid over the top to trap in the steam. This is a quick way to steam and warm the crab legs up.
How to Crack the shells off of King Crab Legs at Home
To crack the shells start by breaking the cooked crab legs apart at the joints with your hands.
Now use your kitchen shears (kitchen scissors) to cut vertically into the shell of the crab legs to release the crab meat.
Move all the crab meat to a plate and cover it with plastic wrap and let it chill in the fridge until ready to add to the salad.
If you want to go the extra mile with this delicious salad, you can make the Thousand Island Dressing from scratch. It’s sooo good homemade!
