Occasionally you find yourself in a jam when ready to make a recipe and you need a can of sweetened condensed milk and you don’t have any on hand. Sure you could borrow some from a neighbor if needed, but it’s nice to know you can make this simple homemade recipe for something that you most likely have all the ingredients for at home. Save yourself a trip and make it yourself.
The ingredient line up is so simple. Sure, a can of “c-milk” is super cheap at the store, and a great thing to stock up on at home for your at home food storage, but in a jiffy, it’s nice to know you can DIY it if needed.
What you need to make Sweetened Condensed milk:
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 pinch baking soda
- 4 tablespoons salted butter *optional
- 1 teaspoon vanilla *optional
How to make Homemade Sweetened Condensed Milk:
1. Add the milk and sugar to a medium sized sauce pan.
2. Bring to a boil and then reduce to a simmer on medium-high heat, stirring continually. The milk will reduce by half its volume. This will take about 20 minutes. The milk can boil over any point, so keep stirring occasionally and don’t walk away.
3. After about 17-18 minutes, the milk will turn a warm cream color and the texture will become frothy.
4. Turn off the heat and add the baking soda, butter and vanilla. Stir well and let it cool.
