We love this Asian inspired recipe for an easy weeknight meal.
Oriental Beef and Carrot Hot Dish is an old family favorite. You might be able to guess this by the title alone. “Hot Dish” isn’t exactly the kind of words you’d find in a recipe today (tee-hee), but if you go off taste alone, this recipe is a keeper! It’s a great recipe to use up leftover steak from the night before, and everyone will love it!
Ingredients you will need for Beef and Carrots:
Here is what you’ll need to make Beef and Carrots
- 1/2 pound thinly sliced beef
- 2 cups carrots julienne
- 1 can beef broth
- 1/2 teaspoon ginger
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 tablespoon corn starch
- 2 tablespoons water
How to make Beef and Carrots:
- Brown the beef in extra virgin olive oil.
- Add the remaining ingredients and simmer for 30 minutes.
- Add the carrots and cook until tender.
- Serve over rice.

Yes! This dish is a popular Chinese recipe. Similar to a stir fry, simmering the beef and veggies in a delicious sauce creates a classic Chinese dish that everyone will enjoy.
How to Julienne carrots:
There are multiple ways to julienne your carrots for this recipe. You can use a vegetable peeler, handheld mandolin or a kitchen knife to create this fancy cut.
When using a vegetable peeler you should peel the carrots lengthwise, and cut into small, 8cm strips.
If you want to stick with your kitchen knife, peel the entire carrot and cut thin strips lengthwise. Stack the strips and cut into smaller, 8cm strips.
Can you add more vegetables to Chinese Beef and Carrots?
Of course! If you are looking for a better way to get those veggies in, this recipe is a great way! Throw in any veggie you’d like. Some recommended for best taste would be broccoli, mushrooms, potatoes, sweet bell peppers, and/or snow peas.
What to serve with Beef and Carrot Stir Fry:
We like to serve this dish over rice, but there are many other sides that will go great with this recipe. To name a few:
- Fresh fruit (goes great with fresh pineapple)
