Red Beans and Rice is a warm hearty meal that the whole family will love!
Red Beans and Rice is pure comfort food! So much flavor is packed into the warm sauce. It comes together easily and uses ingredients that you likely already have in your pantry! Served with greens it makes the perfect weeknight meal.
What you will need to make Red Beans and Rice with Sausage:
- 2 cans red kidney beans
- 1 turkey sausage
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
- 1 can chicken stock
For the rice:
- 1 cup rice rinsed
- 2 cups water
How to make Red Beans and Rice with Sausage:
- Rinse your rice then steam with the water in a rice steamer or a covered pot.
- Slice the turkey sausage into 1/2 inch slices. Sauté the turkey sausage in a pan on medium high heat until you start to see browning on both sides.
- Add one can of the beans into the pan where you sautéed the sausage. With an immersion blender, puree the beans with the chicken stock, onion and garlic powders, salt and sugar until smooth.
- Now add in the second can of rinsed beans. Let it come to a boil. Simmer for 20 minutes.
- Serve over the steamed rice layered with the bean mixture and topped with the turkey sausage. You can also mix the sausage into the beans.
How to store Red Beans and Rice with Sausage:
To store Red Beans and Rice just place the sauce and rice in separate air tight containers in the fridge. It will last from 5 to 7 days chilled in the fridge!
Can you use a different bean in Red Beans and Rice?
Of course! If you prefer a different bean or just don’t have red beans on hand, go ahead and use what you have. Some good options are black beans and kidney beans.
Meat that goes well with Red Beans and Rice:
Traditionally, and in our version we like to add sausage, but you could always substitute the sausage with pork, shredded/grilled chicken, or shredded beef. If you want to make it vegetarian, just don’t add meat!
