Snowman Bark is a festive way to give and enjoy your favorite milk chocolate.
We love chocolate bark, and we love how you can really make it your own and customize it how ever you like. Here’s a festive way to enjoy your favorite kind of chocolate…make Snowman Bark!
Where does the term bark for chocolate bark come from?
Chocolate gets the name chocolate bark or even “almond bark” when chocolate breaks off in chunks and the small pieces resemble that of a tree like tree bark. You can make candy bark in so many different ways by adding in pieces of candy or nuts.
What do you need to make Snowman Bark?
-1 bag good quality chocolate (we LOVE Guittard brand milk chocolate chips)
-1 bag Bright White Candy melts
-1 bag pretzel sticks
-1 bag candy corn candy
How to make Snowman Bark:
- Start by making the snowmen noses with the orange part of the candy corn candies. Cut both the yellow and white sections off of the candy corn. Add a few of the orange sections into a glass microwave safe bowl and microwave for 30 until soft. Use your fingers to break off tiny pieces of the orange and roll them to look like tiny little carrots for the snowmen noses.
- Melt a few of the bright white candy melts to use as an edible adhesive to get the orange carrot nose to stick to the center of the snowman face on the round candy melt. Add a little white candy melt to the underside of the candy corn carrot nose and gently place it to the center of a bright white candy melt.
- In a glass ramekin dish add a few milk chocolate chips and a little bit of coconut oil. Microwave for 30 – 1 minute (or longer) to melt the chocolate chips. Stir the melted chocolate together with the coconut oil. Dot the end of a wooden skewer into the melted chocolate and use it to dot chocolate onto the white candy melt to make a snowman face. Make two dots for the eyes and a few dots to make a smile.
- Add a piece of parchment to a sheet pan.
- In a microwave safe bowl, microwave the chocolate chips until starting to melt. This may take anywhere from 2-5 minutes. Be careful not to overcook the chocolate chips causing them to burn. Take the bowl out of the microwave and stir the chocolate chips together until it is all smooth.
- Carefully pour the melted chocolate onto the parchment lined pan. Gently smooth out the chocolate with a rubber spatula.
- While the chocolate is still warm place the bright white candy melts into the melted chocolate. Place the snowman face in first followed by two more candy melt rounds for the snowman body. Break one pretzel stick in half to make the snowman arms.
- Add a few white sprinkles to finish it off. We used white star sprinkles and white dots, but you can use white snowflake sprinkles too.
- Move your pan into cool low humidity place to allow the chocolate to set and harden.
- Once the chocolate is set, break it into pieces to make chocolate bark. Enjoy!
Why does chocolate bloom?… and how to prevent chocolate from blooming:
Working with melted chocolate, you learn that there is something that sometimes happens to chocolate that is called blooming, and there are ways to prevent this from happening. When chocolate blooms it changes color and turns a chalky white color. The chocolate is still completely edible and it tastes the same, it just looks a little different.
How to fix chocolate that has turned white:
How To Prevent Chocolate Fat Bloom:
Fat bloom is the cocoa butter separating from the cocoa solids and coming to the surface. To prevent the fat bloom you just need to keep the chocolate at the right temperature. 64F or 18-20C is the right temp. To fix chocolate that has turned white you can melt it back down again and the fat in the chocolate will go back into the chocolate.
How to Prevent Chocolate Sugar Bloom:
Sugar bloom is caused by moisture. Condensation can cause chocolate to have a sugar bloom. If the chocolate is stored in a humid place like the refrigerator and then taken out of the fridge, this can cause the sugar in the chocolate to bloom. If you store chocolate in a low-humid place with stable temps and keep it away from liquids, you can prevent the chocolate to have a sugar bloom.
