With all the food prep and planning happening for the holidays don’t let breakfast slip by, an easy and delicious breakfast casserole is perfect for those busy holiday mornings.
With all the hustle and bustle of the holidays, it can become overwhelming when it comes to planning out holiday meals but breakfast doesn’t have to be one of the meals that you stress over. This Sourdough breakfast casserole is perfect for mornings together or for any busy morning for that matter. It is so easy to put together, you can even make it the night before and bake it up in the morning.
What is needed to make sourdough breakfast casserole
- sourdough bread cut into cubes
- cooked bacon crumbles
- grated mozzarella cheese
- eggs
- whole milk
- dry mustard
- salt
- pepper
What kind of bread can be used to make a breakfast casserole?
We are using sourdough bread for this breakfast casserole but if you’re not a fan of sourdough bread, no worries… You can still make this delicious casserole just use whatever bread you like. You can use fresh bread or day old bread. It is just all a matter of preference. We had leftover sourdough bread, and it worked great in this casserole.
Can I make ahead and freeze a breakfast casserole?
If you want to get a head on your cooking whether it be for the holidays or Sunday dinners or just to have meals on hand for busy mornings you can prepare this casserole the night before.
Just make it…and bake it, let it cool down and wrap it up with cling wrap… and aluminum foil and place it in your freezer for up to 2 months. To reheat the casserole: just take it out of your freezer and let it thaw overnight in you refrigerator then bake it for about 20 minutes or until it is fully reheated in your oven on 350 degrees.
How to make sourdough breakfast casserole
- Spray a 9×13 baking dish with non-stick cooking spray.
- Place cubed bread into the prepared dish.
- Sprinkle 1/4 cup of cooked bacon over top the bread.
- Sprinkle the freshly grated cheese over top.
- In a medium-size bowl, beat together the eggs, milk, dry mustard, salt and pepper. Beat until all of the egg yolks are well mixed.
- Pour the egg mixture over the cheese.
- Cover the casserole with plastic wrap or foil and refrigerate overnight or at least 6 hours.
- Preheat your oven to 350.
- Bake the casserole, covered with foil, for 40 minutes. Uncover and sprinkle the rest of the cooked bacon crumbles on top and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes or until the middle of the casserole is puffed and set.
- Serve warm.

- 2 1/4 cups whole milk
- 2 teaspoon dry mustard
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground pepper
Instructions
