Swedish Meatballs Recipe
This recipe is pure comfort food, the best! I’m excited to share my Grandma Kae’s Swedish meatball recipe.
Don’t you just love finding the well loved recipe cards that your mom has cooked with for years? I had to snap a pic of the recipe card for this recipe. There is just something so special about this little worn out old recipe card, something that’s lost in today’s world of technology. I love everything about it. Although, as much as I love it, I have to say I love the advances we have made more.
Recipes that have stood the test of time. I love being able to access all of them from my phone with ease, it’s pretty amazing, don’t you think?
Here’s a pic of all the meatballs cooked and ready to go.
What you need to make Swedish Meatballs:
- 1/4 cup onion chopped
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 3/4 teaspoon salt and pepper
- 1 lb. ground beef
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup light cream
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 1 can beef broth or beef consommé
- 1 tablespoon butter
How to make Swedish Meatballs:
- Sauté the chopped onion in one tablespoon butter until it’s tender, not brown.
- In a stand mixer or with a hand mixer add the ground beef and season with salt and pepper.
- Beat in the flour and egg, and gradually beat in the cream into the meat mixture. Now add the cooked chopped onion. The mixture should be light and fluffy.
- Form the meat mixture into meatballs. Lightly brown the meatballs in a little butter in a large sauté pan set to medium high heat.
- Shake the skillet as you brown the meatballs on all sides. Remove the excess fat.
- Add the beef broth and cook for 15 minutes. Thicken with cornstarch and water. Serve with mashed potatoes.
The Secret to making the Best Swedish Meatballs:
The secret to making the best Swedish meatballs is to mix the meatball mixture in a stand mixer or with a hand mixer until they are light and fluffy. It makes the most soft and tender meatballs. They are so good!
