Mattress review: The intelliBED
For the last 16 years, my husband and I have been sleeping on the same queen sized mattress. When we were first married we were just happy to have a bed to call ours. Fast forward 16+ years, and this mattress was really showing the years with the permanent imprint of our bodies (even with the routine flipping and rotating), we were ready for a new mattress. Shopping for a new mattress is something most of us don’t do often, and when we do, we might not think much about the materials used to make it. We’ve been doing our research, and I’m so happy to share with you why we chose an intelliBED mattress, and I think you should too. Sleep is such an important part of our lives, I mean it’s where you spend 1/3 of your life after all.
The purchase of a new mattress is a big one and a decision worth a lot of thought and consideration. There are so many options out there, but when it came down to it, we chose intelliBED for a few reasons. The word ‘Non-Toxic’ definitely took this mattress to the top of our list.
Made with NON-TOXIC Materials
You wouldn’t think something like a mattress where you spend 1/3 of your life would be made with toxic materials, but many mattresses made today are filled with synthetic materials (like synthetic foam), which tend to break down with use and release chemicals. This release of chemicals is known as: off-gassing. These toxic chemicals can cause headaches, rashes and more serious issues like a flareup of an autoimmune disease. By law retail mattresses manufactured in the U.S. are sprayed with a flame retardant cocktail that can include a mixture of these chemicals:
Over time, these mattresses can “off-gas” these chemicals which you either breathe in or absorb through your skin. That means you’re literally breathing in formaldehyde…makes me sick just thinking about it.
One of the first things I noticed about our new intelliBED mattress was that I couldn’t smell it at all. I’m really sensitive to scent, and the last place you want to be breathing in toxic chemicals is your mattress.
The intelliBED mattress is made with non-toxic materials that are hypoallergenic and anti-microbial. Their patented Intelli-Gel is similar to what is used to make a baby bottle nipple. The rest of the mattress uses steel springs (for the best support) and organic cotton. Finally it is treated with a modacrylic fiber fire blocker that is silica based.
Made with their patented: Intelli-Gel (the blue waffle layer in the mattress photo below), it’s so safe. This material is used in hospitals to cushion patients with the severest wound care situations like bed sores and burns.
Back Support and Pressure Relief
Along with non toxic materials, good back support was also really high on our list when considering our next mattress. He’s a back and stomach sleeper and I’m a side sleeper, so finding a good mattress that was both soft with good support was tricky. The Intelli-Gel technology uses a patented gel-matrix that keeps the body balanced and comfortable while sleeping. This reduces pressure points on the shoulders and hips so they don’t get irritated and tell the body to move, which wakes us up from a deep sleep. Because their beds have a firm foundation under the Intelli-Gel, the hips and shoulders are able to stay in proper alignment with the rest of the body, therefore staying in a comfortable sleep longer.
We have been so pleased with our intelliBED mattress when it comes to firmness and back support. The specific mattress we have is called motion dampening meaning when one of us moves at night the movement is dampened by the mattress allowing for a more uninterrupted deep sleep.
Temperature is also something we considered. Some of these new mattresses sleep really hot, and when you feel hot in your bed, it’s the worst. The Intelli-Gel is near the top of the mattress (in addition to a breathable fabric over the top) and it was developed for burn survivors in hospitals, so it’s good at maintaining a neutral temperature.
Cost and Durability
The cost of a new intelliBED is an investment. While a king size mattress runs about $3,500, it is warrantied to last an unheard of 30 years in optimal sleeping condition. That’s $116 per year for optimal, non-toxic sleep…that’s only 32 cents a night! For us, not having to think about buying a mattress for another 30 years is quite a relief and completely worth $116 per year. When you break the cost down like that, it makes something you spend 1/3 of your life on an easy decision.
