Enjoy the last of your garden and make: Oven Baked Fried Green Tomatoes.
This time of year, we tend to have a bunch of tomatoes on the vine, but they are all green, and sadly they most likely will not ripen. So let’s make fried green tomatoes! Although these are technically not fried, they are baked in the oven. Dip these in ranch dressing for a delicious snack, appetizer, lunch or dinner…they’re so good! Typically these green tomatoes are fried, but when you bake them in the oven, you will use a lot less oil. You can also cook them with your air fryer (see air fryer directions and cook time below).
Ingredients:
- green tomatoes, sliced about 1/2 inch thick
- almond flour (or corn meal or panko bread crumbs)
- Cavender’s Greek Seasoning (or your favorite season salt
- eggs, beaten well
- ranch dressing, for dipping
How to make Fried Green Tomatoes:
- Preheat oven to 350F. Grease a sheet pan with olive oil.
- With a sharp knife, cut the tomatoes into slices that are about 1/2 inch thick. Discard the end pieces.
- In a small bowl, beat the eggs.
- In another bowl, mix the almond flour with the Greek Seasoning.
- Working one tomato slice at a time, dip both sides of the tomato slice into the egg mixture. Let the excess egg drip back into the dish with the eggs.
- Now press the tomato slice into the almond flour mixture, using the fork or your fingers to press the almond mixture onto the tomato slice so it covers all sides of each tomato slice. Repeat this process for each tomato slice.
- Place each tomato on the baking sheet after it’s coated with the almond flour mixture.
- Bake the coated tomatoes for 35-40 minutes, turning them over once during the cooking time.
- While the tomatoes bake, prepare the ranch dressing for the dipping sauce.
- The tomatoes will be done when the almond flour coating is lightly browned on each side and the tomatoes are cooked through. Serve warm.
Variations:
- Get creative with the dipping sauce! Skip the store bought ranch dressing, and mix up your own at home (it’s so much better!) Try making our favorite cilantro lime ranch or you can mix a little hot sauce (like sriracha) into regular ranch for a little extra spice.
- If you have a nut allergy, swap the almond flour for cornmeal, or Panko style bread crumbs. They are all great options for the coating.
- Use your favorite season salt in the mixture with the almond flour. You can even just season it with salt and pepper.
Tips and Tricks:
- Keep a small bowl of water near your breading station to dip your fingers into after each application of the almond flour mixture. This helps to clean off your fingers before you dip into the egg mixture again.
- Choose larger sized green tomatoes. If the tomatoes are too small, they are hard to work with.
- Discard the tomato ends. When you are making something like fried green tomatoes, you can feel good about being resourceful and not wasting food, so you don’t need to worry about throwing out the ends.
- Slice the tomatoes with the stem end on its side, if you look at the cut tomatoes photo you can see the visual of what they should look like.
Storing + Reheating:
If you have any leftover, they will keep on a plate (covered) in your fridge for a day or two. You can warm them up in the microwave, or in a toaster oven for a more crisp texture.
Can you freeze Fried Green Tomatoes:
Yes! When it comes to freezing, you can freeze them before baking or after baking. Place them onto a sheet pan and let them freeze individually for a few hours and them move them to a gallon sized freezer safe bag to keep in the freezer for up to 3 months. When ready to bake, take them out of the freezer and place on a greased baking sheet and bake.
Air Fryer Fried Green Tomatoes:
To cook fried green tomatoes in the air fryer, heat the air fryer to 400 degrees and cook for 5-6 minutes. Flip each tomato over, spray with cooking spray and cook for an additional 5 minutes.
Tips for the air fryer: don’t crowd them into the air fryer basket. Avoid too much excess batter on each one. Spray with cooking spray on both sides.
