Seven Layer Salad is fresh and colorful with a tangy sweet dressing that tops it all off. This salad is a classic that is still popular for a reason, it goes with anything and is oh so delicious.
Seven Layer Salad is a recipe that your mother probably made and it is still a favorite for a reason. With bright fresh flavors and protein from the eggs, bacon and cheese this salad is served in layers and topped with a tangy dressing. Just like our Italian Pasta Salad it is perfect for potlucks or picnics. It is always a hit as a side dish with a weeknight dinner or served at a large gathering.
Ingredients for Seven Layer Salad:
- 1 pound bacon, cooked and crumbled
- 1 1/4 cups mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon white sugar
- 2/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 large head iceberg lettuce chopped, rinsed and spun
- 1 pint grape tomatoes (cut in half) optional
- 2 cups frozen green peas (thawed)
- 1 stalk celery, diced
- 1/2 green bell pepper, diced
- 6 large hardboiled eggs
- 2 cups grated cheddar cheese
How to Make Seven Layer Salad:
- Cook the bacon in a skillet over medium high heat until it is all brown and crisp. Place the cooked bacon on a paper towel lined plate to absorb excess grease. When cool, crumble the bacon and set aside.
- Prepare the dressing by whisking together the mayonnaise, sugar and Parmesan cheese. Cover and refrigerate the dressing until ready to add to the top of the salad.
- In a large 4 quart glass bowl (this is a great salad to serve in a trifle bowl), layer the chopped iceberg lettuce, celery, green bell pepper, peas, hard boiled eggs and grated cheese.
- Add the dressing over the top of the salad, covering as much of the top as possible.
- Sprinkle the top with more grated parmesan cheese and the cooked bacon crumbles.
- Cover the top with plastic wrap and keep chilled in the fridge until you are ready to serve.
Best way to cook hard boiled eggs:
We have tried several methods to get the perfect hard boiled egg. We wanted an egg that was hard boiled but not over cooked (you know they are overcooked when they have that slight green ring around the yolk that can happen when eggs are boiled too long). The other important element we wanted was an egg that peeled easily. Here is the method we prefer: How to Steam Eggs. Try it and you will never go back to boiling your eggs.
Variations:
- Mix up your veggies. Try adding cauliflower, red bell pepper, artichoke hearts or broccoli.
- Add extra protein. Try adding diced ham or turkey.
- Switch up the toppings. Top Seven Layer Salad with green onions, crispy fried onions, or sliced olives.
